Xavier Kurt Naidoo ( 2. Oktober 1971 in Mannheim) ist ein deutscher Soul- und R&B-Sänger. Neben seiner Solokarriere ist er Gründungsmitglied der deutschen Musikgruppe Söhne Mannheims, Mitinitiator und Dozent an der Mannheimer Popakademie und hat mit Beats Around the Bush und naidoo records eigene Plattenlabels gegründet.

Dabei reicht die Alterspalette vom Teenager bis zu den Großeltern. Und wollte man versuchen, diese Gruppe zahlenmäßig zu benennen, müsste man wohl die Hilfe eines Marktforschungsinstituts in Anspruch nehmen. Aber was ist es, das eine solche Faszination bei so vielen unterschiedlichen Menschen jeden Alters auslöst, wenn es um den Mannheimer geht?

Vielleicht findet sich eine Begründung bei einem Blick auf seine Persönlichkeit. Sein Privatleben ist das, was das Wort beinhaltet, "privates Leben", und dies stellt er nun mal nicht ins Rampenlicht.

Doch er hat auch gelernt, mal nein zu sagen, wenn es um wirtschaftliche und firmenspezifische Entscheidungen geht, da er sich seiner Verantwortung als Arbeitgeber durchaus bewusst ist. Bei aller Disziplin mag er jedoch auch das Unmittelbare, das Umsetzen einer Idee ohne Termindruck. So taucht er manches Mal irgendwo auf und spielt ein kostenloses Spontankonzert, ganz ohne vorherige Ankündigung.

Ein weiterer Aspekt ist wohl die Musik. Mit seinen Texten berührt er die unterschiedlichsten Gefühle, verleiht einer Szene immer den richtigen Ton, und seine Songs ziehen Menschen in ihren Bann. Sei es durch die Griffigkeit eines Refrains oder das musikalische Skizzieren einer Situation. Seine deutsche Grammatik mag dabei vielleicht so manchem Lehrer Kopfschmerzen bereiten, doch das, was er zu sagen hat, ist durch seine Wortwahl leicht verständlich und treffend. Sein musikalisches Verständnis lässt sich wohl am besten mit einem Zitat von Mozart erklären: "das Notwendigste und das Härteste und die Hauptsache in der Musik ist das Tempo". Als "Sammler" von Beats, die letztendlich "tonangebend" für seine Songs sind, nuanciert auch er dadurch die Stimmungen in seinen Kompositionen. Leben

Naidoos Vater Rausammy stammte aus Sri Lanka, hatte tamilische Vorfahren und arbeitete zunächst in England. Mit Xaviers Mutter Eugene, einer Südafrikanerin arabischer Abstammung, ließ er sich dann in Mannheim nieder. Xavier Naidoo wuchs römisch-katholisch im Stadtteil Wallstadt auf. Noch heute lebt er in seiner Heimatstadt, der er, auch zusammen mit den Söhnen Mannheims, einige Lieder wie beispielsweise Meine Stadt und Wo ist mein Platz widmete.

Naidoo sagt, dass er in seiner Schulzeit oft wegen seiner dunklen Hautfarbe gehänselt und bedroht wurde, weshalb seine Kindheit und Jugend nicht immer einfach war. Um sich im Notfall besser verteidigen zu können, erlernte er damals das Kickboxen.

Seine ersten musikalischen Erfahrungen machte er in Schul- und Kirchenchören. Er wurde Mitglied des Celebration Gospel Choir, mit dem er eine CD aufnahm, und der Regionalband Just 4 Music. Er erlangte die mittlere Reife an der Feudenheim-Realschule, begann eine Lehre als Koch, modelte für Bademoden, war Türsteher des Mannheimer Breakbeat-Clubs Milk! und ging in die USA, wo er unter dem Künstlernamen Kobra sein erstes Soloalbum, Seeing Is Believing, veröffentlichte. 1995 und 1998 stand er bei den Musicals Human Pacific und People von Richard Geppert über 100 mal in Mannheim und Hockenheim als Hauptdarsteller auf der Bühne.

trat er als Backgroundsänger beim Rödelheim Hartreim Projekt der Frankfurter Produzenten Moses Pelham und Thomas Hofmann auf. Dort wurde er vom Label 3p entdeckt und als Solostar aufgebaut. Mit Sabrina Setlur nahm er 1997 die Single Freisein auf und wurde so erstmals einem größeren Publikum bekannt. Die Kooperation mit 3p endete jedoch im Streit, nachdem Naidoo mit den Söhnen Mannheims erste Produktionen veröffentlicht hatte; das stellte nach Ansicht von 3p einen Vertragsverstoß dar. In der darauffolgenden Klage entschied das Landgericht Mannheim schließlich zu Gunsten Naidoos. Eine vor dem Bundesverfassungsgericht daraufhin eingereichte Verfassungsbeschwerde wurde 2005 nicht zur Entscheidung angenommen.

Wegen des Besitzes von 48 Gramm Haschisch und des Fahrens ohne Fahrerlaubnis wurde Xavier Naidoo im November 2000 zu 20 Monaten Freiheitsstrafe auf Bewährung und einer Geldstrafe von 100.000 DM verurteilt.

Naidoo ist überzeugter Vegetarier: „Dank eines Raps von Kool Savas bin ich Vegetarier geworden.“ Naidoo bezieht sich dabei auf eine Passage im Lied Der beste Tag meines Lebens.

Naidoo unterstützt die umstrittene Fernsehsendung Tatort Internet (RTL II) mit dem Titelsong Sie verdienen einen besonderen Schutz.

2012 entschied der Bundesgerichtshof nach einer von Naidoo angestrengten Klage, dass auch im Falle eines nichtgewerblichen Urheberrechtsverstoßes Provider die Namen und Adressen derjenigen Kunden, die ohne Genehmigung des Rechteinhabers oder -verwerters Musikstücke im Internet hochgeladen und zugänglich gemacht haben, herausgeben müssen.
Solokarriere

Auch auf einer BRAVO-Compilation war das Lied zu finden, wodurch er einem breiteren jungen Publikum bekannt wurde. Man überlegte, eine erste Tour durchzuführen, doch Naidoos Veranstalter rieten ihm davon ab, gleich zu Beginn seiner Karriere auf Solotournee zu gehen. Nachdem sie sich weigerten, eine Tournee zu unterstützen, entschied Naidoo sich für einen außergewöhnlichen Weg – er organisierte die Liveauftritte in ganz Deutschland überwiegend selbst und in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Label 3p. 2002 wurde sein zweites Soloalbum mit dem Titel Zwischenspiel – Alles für den Herrn als Doppelalbum veröffentlicht. Es stieg, wie bereits sein Debütalbum, in Deutschland und Österreich jeweils auf Platz eins der Albumcharts ein. In der Schweiz erreichte es den dritten Platz. Nach der Veröffentlichung dieses Albums wurde Xavier Naidoo mit mehreren Preisen geehrt. So erhielt er zum zweiten Mal nach 1999 den Preis als Bester deutscher Künstler bei den MTV Europe Music Awards.Eine Besonderheit stellen die einzelnen Musikvideos zum Album dar: in mehreren Clips spielen die Schauspieler Esther Schweins und Steffen Wink die Hauptrollen. Ebenfalls 2002 war Naidoo in der deutschen Fassung des Films City of God Synchronsprecher des Protagonisten und Erzählers Buscapé.

Single Ich kenne nichts (das so schön ist wie du) aus dem Album The World According to RZA mit RZA erreichte 2003 in Deutschland Platz eins der Singlecharts.

Im Dezember 2005 veröffentlichte Naidoo sein drittes Soloalbum Telegramm für X. Das Album stieg sofort auf Platz eins der LP-Charts ein, wurde vierfach mit Platin ausgezeichnet und verkaufte sich bis heute rund 800.000 Mal. Das Album eroberte auch in Österreich und in der Schweiz Platz eins der Charts. Eingeleitet wurde dieser Albumerfolg durch die erfolgreiche erste Singleauskopplung Dieser Weg. Der Song kletterte bis auf Platz zwei der deutschen Charts und verharrte dort mehrere Wochen lang. Außerdem erreichte er die Top Ten in Österreich und in der Schweiz.

Bei der Echo-Verleihung 2006 wurde Naidoo unter anderem als bester nationaler Künstler geehrt. Er präsentierte dort im Showteil zum ersten Mal live die zweite Singleauskopplung Bist du am Leben interessiert. Dieser Song erreichte in den deutschen Singlecharts Platz 27 als Höchstplatzierung. Am 23. Juni 2006 wurde der Song Zeilen aus Gold veröffentlicht, am 3. November 2006 folgte Was wir alleine nicht schaffen.


9. Juli 2006 sang Naidoo anlässlich der Begrüßung der deutschen Fußballnationalmannschaft nach der Weltmeisterschaft 2006 auf der Fanmeile in Berlin. Kurze Zeit später veröffentlichte er den Titel Danke, in dem er sich bei der deutschen Fußballnationalmannschaft für ihre Spiele und den dritten Platz bei der Fußball-WM 2006 „bedankt“. Der Song sollte zunächst nur im Internet veröffentlicht werden. Nach der großen Fußball-Begeisterung wurde er aber doch als Single herausgebracht und stieg auf Platz eins der deutschen Singlecharts ein, wo er sich insgesamt fünf Wochen aufhielt. Für über 150.000 verkaufte Singles erhielt er 2006 eine Goldene Schallplatte. Der Titel erreichte auch in Österreich und in der Schweiz die Top Ten. Im Dezember 2006 wurde Naidoo mit dem Radiopreis 1LIVE Krone ausgezeichnet.

2006 wurde er von dem Männermagazin Men’s Health zum bestangezogenen Mann Deutschlands gewählt. Im Jahr 2007 legte Xavier Naidoo seine Soloprojekte betreffend eine Pause ein. Jedoch war er musikalisch an einigen Projekten anderer Künstler beteiligt. Im selben Jahr veröffentlichte Naidoo die im Kinderbuchverlag Wolff erschienene Kinderplatte Peter und der Wolf von Sergej Prokofjew.

2008 trat er zusammen mit den Söhnen Mannheims in der Reihe der MTV Unplugged-Konzerte auf. Im Anschluss daran wurde Wettsingen in Schwetzingen als erstes Doppelalbum in der Geschichte der MTV Unplugged-Reihe veröffentlicht.Das Album verkaufte sich über 300.000 Mal und wurde dreimal mit Gold und einmal mit Platin ausgezeichnet.

2009 tourte Xavier Naidoo gemeinsam mit den Söhnen Mannheims durch Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz. Auf der IZ ON|Alles kann besser werden Tour*2009 wurden in 14 Städten insgesamt 28 Konzerte aufgeführt. So trat an einem Abend zunächst Xavier Naidoo solo auf, am folgenden Abend folgte ein Söhne-Mannheims-Konzert. Auf der Tour wurde einerseits das im Juli 2009 erschienene Söhne-Mannheims-Album Iz On vorgestellt, andererseits das im Oktober 2009 veröffentlichte vierte Soloalbum von Xavier Naidoo, Alles kann besser werden. Auf diesem Album kokettiert Naidoo in dem Stück Goldwaagen/Goldwagen mit diversen Verschwörungstheorien. Unter anderem mit Verschwörungstheorien zu den Terroranschlägen am 11. September 2001. So heißt es dort: "9/11, London und Madrid, jeder weiß dass Al Qaida nur die CIA ist. World Trade Center Nr. 7. Warum ist von dem Gebäude nichts mehr übrig geblieben."

4. März 2010 erhielt er den Echo 2010, überreicht durch Esther Schweins.

Im Juni 2010 besuchte er die deutschen Truppen der Bundeswehr in Afghanistan im Camp Marmal (Mazār-i Scharif) und im Feldlager Kunduz und gab dort mehrere Konzerte, zur Unterstützung der Soldaten vor Ort.

Seit dem Jahr 2011 ist er einer der Juroren und Coaches in der deutschen Gesangs-Castingshow The Voice of Germany.

2012 tritt er für das Bundesland Baden-Württemberg beim Bundesvision Song Contest zusammen mit Kool Savas unter dem Namen Xavas an.
